MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama State Port Authority is partnering with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management to reduce emissions from four diesel locomotives at the Port of Mobile.

Officials said Thursday that automatic shut-down and starting systems that have been approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will be installed on several locomotives that are used to move materials. The devices are meant to reduce emissions from idling equipment.

Officials say ADEM was granted funding through the State Clean Diesel Program and chose to use the money in areas with the highest air pollution levels.

Officials say the port authority will spend about $46,000 on the devices and ADEM will use a $31,000 grant to install the devices by Aug. 28.
