NEW YORK (AP) - The Park Avenue Armory has gotten a $65 million gift from the Thompson Family Foundation that will go toward an endowment for artistic and cultural programming.

The gift announced Thursday adds to monies the foundation has already given the armory, a total of almost $129 million.

The arts programming spaces in the armory will now be called the Thompson Arts Center at Park Avenue Armory, for a period of 50 years.

The foundation was created by Wade Thompson, a businessman who was dedicated to saving the armory from deterioration. The armory was original building between 1877 and 1881. It now hosts performances and exhibitions, as well as serving as a showcase for famous examples of interior design.
