HAMILTON, Ohio (AP) - A 16-year-old boy has admitted to reckless homicide in the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old boy in southwest Ohio.

Butler County Juvenile Court Director Rob Clevenger says the 16-year-old entered the juvenile court equivalent of a guilty plea Thursday to the reckless homicide charge as well as a count of tampering with evidence.

Investigators have said they believe the boys were playing with the firearm in Hamilton when it discharged June 3, striking Gabriel Mejia in the head. He died two days later.

Clevenger says the teen will be sentenced later in Hamilton County, where he’s from, and he’ll be transferred to the juvenile detention center there.

A message to the teen’s attorney seeking comment wasn’t immediately returned.
