RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A Virginia man has been sentenced to four years in prison for importing and distributing anabolic steroids.

Forty-four-year-old Carl E. Macchiarulo of Midlothian also was fined $10,000 Wednesday in federal court in Richmond.

According to court documents, Macchiarulo operated an illegal steroid distribution business out of his home from December 2012 to September 2014. Macchiarulo imported raw steroid powders and pills from China and other countries, manufactured finished products at his home and sold them through the mail to customers in more than 30 states. He had advertised his business on websites.

As part of the plea agreement, he agreed to forfeit more than $163,455 seized by law enforcement.
