NEW YORK (AP) - The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for the New York City area through Tuesday night.

A half inch to three quarters of an inch of rainfall per hour is possible on Monday. It could cause flash flooding especially in poor drainage areas.

The high on Monday will be 70. Winds will be around 10 mph.

The heavy rain began Sunday. Flooding closed the Long Island Expressway in both directions at Utopia Parkway in Queens and an entrance ramp on the Jackie Robinson Parkway at Union Turnpike. It slowed traffic on the Brooklyn Queens Expressway and suspended or delayed some Staten Island Railway service.

More heavy rain is expected on Tuesday.

Clearing will begin Tuesday night.

Sunny conditions and a high of 60 are forecast for Wednesday.
