SEATTLE (AP) - The jury has begun deliberating the fate of a man accused of killing a Seattle police officer.

Seattlepi.com reports (https://bit.ly/1eLwhqi ) that prosecutors made their final closing arguments in the trial of Christopher Monfort on Monday morning and the case went to the jury.

Defense attorney Carl Luer told jurors on Friday that Monfort is crazy, psychotic and unhinged. He says the defendant believed police were a “lawless gang” and thought he had to stop them by killing random officers.

Monfort has been on trial since January. He’s charged with five felonies, including aggravated murder in the 2009 fatal shooting of Officer Timothy Brenton. Monfort is also accused of trying to kill other officers, including Brenton’s partner. He has pleaded guilty by reason of insanity.

Senior Deputy Prosecutor Jeff Baird told jurors on Wednesday that the while defendant is “not normal,” that doesn’t make him insane.
