LA VERNE, Calif. (AP) - A 16-year-old football player at a Los Angeles County high school was taken to a hospital in critical condition after collapsing at team workouts.

La Verne fire Capt. Dave Benson told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune that the 16-year-old junior at Damien High School wasn’t breathing and didn’t have a pulse when firefighters arrived at the early-morning practice on Monday. Benson says firefighters were able to revive his breathing and his heart.

The player was taking part in the team’s summer conditioning program and wasn’t wearing pads.

His condition was most recently listed as serious.

The school’s athletic director Jeff Grant said in a statement to the Los Angeles Times that “we offer our prayers for our student and his family so that he may have a full recovery.”
