GREECE, N.Y. (AP) - Police say a man was fatally shot by an officer in a suburban Rochester mall parking lot after a confrontation.

Greece Police Chief Patrick Phelan says a man matching the description of a missing person was spotted driving in the parking lot at the Mall at Greece Ridge around 3 p.m. Monday. When officers approached the man, Phelan said there was “some sort of altercation” and the man was shot.

Phelan said the man was armed with a handgun. He didn’t know if the suspect, described as a white male, had fired.

Phelan said the man’s identity is being withheld pending notification of his family.
