MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) - Police in the southern Oregon city of Medford say a reportedly depressed man who exchanged gunfire with an officer has died of his injuries.

Police Chief Tim George said Monday that 40-year-old James Anthony Morris was fatally shot late Sunday night after he fired at least one shot at a Medford officer who had responded to a woman’s call about a depressed man who was threatening suicide. Police were told the man had threatened to harm officers.

The chief says the officer encountered Morris walking in a residential area, the man advanced on the officer and there was an exchange of gunfire.

The unidentified officer has been placed on leave while the shooting is investigated. The officer was not hurt.
