TOWN OF EDGEWATER, Wis. (AP) - The adult son of a Sawyer County couple killed them and took his own life outside their burning home, sheriff’s officials said Monday.

Eric Werachowski, 41, shot his father in the abdomen Saturday at the Town of Edgewater home he shared with his parents and then set fire to the house, said Chief Deputy Brigette Kornbroke of the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Department.

Marilyn Werachowski, 60, called Washburn County sheriff’s dispatchers about 11 a.m. to report the shooting and the fire, authorities said. Dispatchers then lost contact with the woman. Washburn County relayed the information to Sawyer County and deputies from both agencies responded. Sawyer County dispatchers tried to reach the woman, but were unable to make contact.

Deputies found the son dead from a self-inflicted gunshot outside the rural residence, Kornbroke said. The bodies of his parents, including Richard Werachowski, 62, were found inside the house when the fire was extinguished.

An autopsy showed the mother died in the fire and was not shot, authorities said. It’s not immediately known if the father died from the gunshot wound or the fire, according to sheriff’s officials. Dental records were being obtained to make positive identification of the parents.

An investigation showed ongoing tension between the two men, Kornbroke said.

“There had been extensive conflict between him and his father,” she said.

The investigation also showed evidence of accelerants in the house, which was destroyed in the fire, officials said.
