NEW YORK (AP) - The lead prosecutor in the Etan Patz (AY’-tahn payts) case plans to run for Staten Island district attorney.

Joan Illuzzi-Orbon will face off against former Democratic Representative Michael McMahon.

The longtime assistant district attorney in Manhattan and chief of the hate crimes unit was selected as the Republican nominee on Sunday.

The election is scheduled for this fall, unless the governor calls a special election before then.

Former Staten Island district attorney Dan Donovan became a congressman last month, replacing Michael Grimm who resigned in January after pleading guilty to tax fraud.

Donovan came to national attention last year when a Staten Island grand jury he empaneled didn’t charge a white police officer in the videotaped chokehold death of Eric Garner, an unarmed black man.
