PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence is adding about 700 new metered parking spaces that take credit and debit cards.

The Providence Journal (https://bit.ly/1eLiO1I ) reports that the spaces will be added to Federal Hill, Hope Street and Wayland Square.

Mayor Jorge Elorza presented his proposed 2015-16 city budget last month anticipating the collection money outside of raising taxes.

Elorza’s proposed budget anticipates $4.2 million in parking-meter revenue - about $1.7 million more than this year.

There are currently around 1,400 metered parking spaces.

The new black box meters can handle a dozen or more parking spaces.
