NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) - A strong earthquake has rumbled off the Oregon coast but it appeared too distant to cause any problems.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude-5.8 temblor struck shortly before 10 p.m. and was centered in the Pacific nearly 300 miles west of Newport.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s office in Newport says it hasn’t received any calls from the public about the quake.

Amy Vaughan with the USGS says it occurred in an active seismic area.
