NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) - An explosion in an underground transformer sparked a fire that sent flames and thick black smoke spewing out of a sidewalk near New Brunswick’s Civic Square.

Several nearby buildings were briefly evacuated shortly after the fire started around 11 a.m. Monday, including the Middlesex County administration building and courthouses and the New Brunswick police department and post office.

Michael Rizzolo, a regional operations manager for the postal service, says the transformer blew up outside the loading dock for the Bayard Street post office. The fire damaged the side of the building, but no injuries were reported.

The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
