CHILI, N.Y. (AP) - An upstate New York man was killed when his car was hit struck by an Amtrak train at a railroad crossing.

Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies say 20-year-old Brandon Sauer of North Chili drove past a vehicle stopped in front of him and went around the crossing gate. The train hit the back of his car just before 6 a.m. Monday and spun it around, taking out the back seats.

Deputies say the gates were working with the arms down and caution lights activated. The crossing is in the suburb of Chili (CHY’-ly), just west of Rochester.

Amtrak officials say there were no injuries among the 21 passengers and four crew members on the train from Niagara Falls to New York City.

Investigators say they believe Sauer was headed to work.
