LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Louisville Gas and Electric Co. and Kentucky Utilities Co. have launched a new way for customers to report power outages.

The companies say customers whose current mobile phone number is on file as the outage reporting number may use that phone to report an outage by texting OUTAGE or receive status updates by texting STATUS. When service is restored, a text will confirm the power is back on.

The number to send the text to is 4LGEKU, or 454358. The companies recommend adding the number to the phone’s contacts list.

Do not use texting to report a gas leak or downed power line. Customers who suspect a gas leak should evacuate the area immediately and notify LG&E; at (502) 589-1444. Use the same number to report a downed wire.
