ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York’s attorney general has sent letters to eBay and PayPal telling them to explain provisions in their new agreements for users that authorize receiving robocalls.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says consumer preferences for privacy and choice are protected by state and federal laws, including those specifically aimed at stopping companies from using invasive automatic calling to promote products.

In letters to the companies, his office wants answers by June 19 about their objectives, applications to affiliates and service providers, and how users can opt out.

PayPal says it clarified its policies last week on its blog and customers can choose not to receive autodialed or prerecorded message calls.

An eBay spokeswoman says they look forward to responding to the questions.

The companies plan to separate this year.
