MCKINNEY, Texas (AP) - Two Dallas-area teens have been sentenced to 30 years in prison each for the strangulation murder of a 17-year-old classmate in an apparent dispute over a girl.

A state district judge in McKinney sentenced 18-year-old Brenden Frank Bridges and 17-year-olf Adam Blake Staup on Friday. Both had pleaded guilty on June 9 to murder in the March 2014 death of 17-year-old Ivan Mejia (meh-HEE’-yah). Bridges and Staup were both 16 at the time of the killing.

All three teens attended Wylie East High School, and prosecutors say Bridges wanted to date the victim’s girlfriend. Mejia’s body was found in a stream near a Garland mall.

Both could have been sentenced to life in prison. Defense attorneys sought sentences of no more than 20 years for their clients.
