SILVERTON, Colo. (AP) - A Silverton man convicted of negligent homicide for killing his wife by throwing a broken bottle at her has been sentenced to two years in prison.

The Durango Herald reports (https://goo.gl/7S9MjM ) Michael McFarland was sentenced Friday for the June 6, 2014, death of 32-year-old Jessica McFarland. At Friday’s hearing, Michael McFarland denied any wrongdoing and cast himself as the victim of a tragic accident.

Prosecutors say he threw the bottle at his wife during an argument at the couple’s home. Jessica McFarland suffered several cuts on her body.

The trial was painful for the town, which only has about 650 year-round residents. The McFarlands grew up there and many people called to jury duty said they knew one or both of them, as well as many of the people on the witness list.
