BENSON, N.C. (AP) - Authorities say 15 people in a church van have been injured after it blew a tire and overturned on Interstate 40 near the Interstate 95 interchange.

Trooper Vincent Rivera said the large van was heading east on I-40 around 8:30 a.m. Saturday when the tire went flat, sending the van across the median before it overturned in the westbound lanes of the interstate near Benson.

Rivera says it was amazing that no westbound traffic on the busy highway hit the van.

Rivera says all nine adults and six children in the van were hurt, and 13 of them went to the hospital. He says none of the injuries appear serious.

Rivera says the van was heading from Raleigh to the beach. The trooper wouldn’t give the name of the church.
