BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) - A City of Bloomington report says a city-owned arena ended the fiscal year with a net operating loss of nearly $500,000.

The (Bloomington) Pantagraph reports (https://bit.ly/1L5Bh36) that the agency that runs the U.S. Cellular Coliseum had projected a profit of about $184,000 for the year ending April 30.

Mayor Tari Renner says the arena is “an important economic venue to the city” but if there’s a loss, city taxpayers are responsible. The mayor says the contract for the arena operator, Central Illinois Arena Management, is up for renegotiation next year.

CIAM President John Butler says a parking deck closure led to a home show moving its event to another venue. That was one of several problems that led to the arena having what he calls “a challenging year.”
