GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - A Gulfport man has received a 20-year prison term for choking his estranged wife.

The Sun Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1QvfCbB) 33-year-old Damion Leqeuinn Lewis was ordered to serve seven years of the prison term after a Harrison County jury found him guilty Thursday of aggravated domestic assault. The verdict came after a three-day trial.

District Attorney Joel Smith says Circuit Judge Larry Bourgeois imposed the maximum 20-year sentence but suspended 13 years, leaving seven years to serve.

Bourgeois ordered Lewis to attend an anger-management program while in prison. The judge also ordered five years of post-release supervision and signed a protection order that expires in 10 years.

Smith said the jury deliberated about an hour before reaching a guilty verdict on an assault reported July 15.
