RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina is getting ready to celebrate the 175th birthday of its capitol building.

The free celebration begins at the capitol building in Raleigh at 11 a.m. Saturday and includes music, history demonstrations and birthday cake.

Starting at 5 p.m. a “Barbecue & Bluegrass Birthday Bash” fundraiser will be held with the proceeds paying for education, restoration and preservation programs at the building.

The capitol building was opened in 1840 after North Carolina’s original capitol was destroyed in a fire nine years before.

The governor’s office remains in the capitol, even though the Senate and House moved to the Legislative Building in 1963.
