PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Federal fishing regulators are looking for a charter vessel operator to help study the efficiency of fishing trawlers’ gear.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Northeast Fisheries Science Center are looking for the vessel. They are working on a study to estimate trawl gear capture efficiency. They say the study will help improve assessments of commercially significant fish populations in the northwestern Atlantic Ocean.

The vessel will be needed to research bottom trawl hauls for a 10 to 15 day period. The research will take place in New England waters including Georges Bank and the Gulf of Maine. Applications are due on Saturday.
