CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - The University of Virginia has a new dean for its School of Medicine.

The Daily Progress reports (https://bit.ly/1FYVljx ) that Dr. David S. Wilkes was named to the post Friday. He is currently the executive associate dean for research affairs at the Indiana University School of Medicine.

Wilkes’ five-year appointment begins Sept. 15.

Dr. Randolph J. Canterbury has been the interim dean since Dr. Nancy Dunlap resigned in November.

Dr. Richard Shannon, the University of Virginia’s executive vice president for health affairs, said Wilkes’ background in research was an important factor in the decision. Wilkes grew the research program at Indiana, which is one of the top priorities at Virginia.
