PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (AP) - Officials say a car alarm alerted four adults and three children to an early morning blaze inside their Port Charlotte home.

The home did not have smoke detectors, but a car alarm went off after the fire began in the home’s attic.

The family’s two dogs, cat and macaw also escaped the fire.

Investigators say the home was not a total loss but that smoke and water damage was extensive.
