MACON, Ga. (AP) - A sheriff’s deputy in central Georgia is facing a drunken driving charge.

Authorities say the Bibb County deputy was apprehended by a Georgia State Patrol trooper early Saturday morning.

Authorities say the trooper was conducting a traffic stop near Riverside Drive and Spring Street when Deputy Mitchell Tharpe pulled up next to the trooper to “assist the motorist.”

The Telegraph reports (https://bit.ly/1GGhWb1) that Tharpe was in his patrol vehicle, but not on duty.

Authorities said in a statement that Tharpe displayed signs of being intoxicated and was given a field sobriety test at the scene. He was booked into the Bibb County Jail on the drunken driving charge.

It was not clear Sunday whether Tharpe had an attorney.
