MONROE, La. (AP) - Police say a West Monroe man arrested on public drunkenness charges was charged with eight additional counts of battery of a police officer after being in custody.

The News-Star reports (https://tnsne.ws/1SfwVuL ) 31-year-old Blake Allen Mays was arrested by West Monroe police Friday on a count of disturbing the peace through drunkenness.

Upon arriving at the jail, police say Mays pushed three officers, including a captain, into a vehicle parked outside of the jail.

Police say as two officers attempted to transport Mays to the Ouachita Correctional Center, Mays had to be placed in a restraint chair. Police say Mays butted an officer in the face with his head and then spit, striking two officers.

Mays was booked into the Ouachita Correctional Center and bond has been set at $42,400.
