LAYTON, Utah (AP) - Vietnam veterans have been honored with a parade and other events in the northern Utah town of Layton.

Dennis Howland of the Utah State Council of Vietnam Veterans of America called it the “welcome home parade they never got” 40 years ago.

He told the Deseret News (https://bit.ly/1HHr2Do ) that roughly 3,000 people participated in or watched Saturday’s parade. Vietnam veterans were cheered as they marched down the streets.

The parade was part of a daylong event organized by the Utah Sounds of Freedom group that included contests, booths and live music at Layton Commons Park.

Proceeds from “The Day They Deserve” event will be used to create a Vietnam veteran memorial in the park.
