CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Visitors are flocking to Carowinds theme park for a last ride on the massive wooden roller coaster called Thunder Road.

The theme park that straddles the state line announced in May that the ride will shut down in late July, according to WRAL-TV (https://bit.ly/1Gmtvkg ). The move will allow for construction of newer attractions.

Jerry Helms, Carowinds’ vice president of operations, says he remembers the excitement over Thunder Road when it opened 40 years ago.

Visitor Andrea Keith brought her son to the park for the ride that she’s been enjoying for years.

She says she’s sad to see the roller coaster that was part of her childhood go.
