BOSTON (AP) - Two teenagers charged with gunning down a 16-year-old boy out riding his bike pleaded not guilty Monday to murder and gun charges.

Sixteen-year-old Dushawn Taylor-Gennis and 14-year-old Raeshawn Moody were ordered held without bail at their arraignment in Dorchester Municipal Court. They are charged as adults but will be kept in the custody of the state Department of Youth Services until their next hearing July 15.

The boys, who were present in the packed courtroom but kept out of sight, are charged in the June 10 killing of Jonathan Dos Santos in the city’s Dorchester neighborhood. Police say the three knew each other, but the motive remains under investigation.

Prosecutors said in court that the suspects “trapped” Dos Santos, who was shot five times while riding his bicycle.

Jennifer Hickman, Suffolk County assistant district attorney, said both suspects are “clearly visible” on surveillance footage from a nearby market. The video, she said, shows the two pacing on a sidewalk before one goes to hide as Dos Santos approaches on his bike.

While Dos Santos and one of the suspects acknowledge each other, Hickman said, the other teen approaches with a handgun and fires multiple shots.

Dos Santos then rides a short distance on his bicycle before collapsing, and the suspects flee on foot, she said. Prosecutors did not say Monday who fired the shots.

Defense lawyers had asked that the boys be released to their parents, noting that their mothers cooperated with police.

Taylor-Gennis’ attorney, Michael Doolin, said afterward that police wrongly arrested his client in a case of “mistaken identity.”

Moody’s attorney, Michael Bourbeau, said he had not seen the video evidence prosecutors described in court and maintained his client’s innocence.
