BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Birmingham police say a 2-year-old is suffering from life-threatening injuries after a man recklessly fired shots at a house.

Multiple news sources report a man knocked on the door of a home looking for another person Sunday afternoon. Birmingham Police Department Lt. Sean Edwards says the man was agitated about something and started shooting, hitting the 2-year-old.

Edwards says the grandfather of the toddler then returned fire on the man at the door, striking him multiple times, including once in the head.

The 2-year-old was taken to Children’s of Alabama with life-threatening injuries. The gunman was taken to UAB hospital, where he was undergoing surgery.

The investigation is ongoing and two people are in custody. It is unclear the roles of those in custody.
