ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - An Albuquerque man accused of stabbing his young stepson has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Prosecutors say 46-year-old Avelino Chavez was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty to child abuse, tampering with evidence, abandonment of a child and aggravated battery.

He was charged with stabbing his then 11-year-old stepson in the chest and abdomen after an argument in December 2013.

The boy survived, but prosecutors say he has lasting mental and physical injuries.

Chavez faced up to a 21-year prison term.

He must serve at least 85 percent of his 15-year sentence and cannot earn credit for good behavior behind bars.

Chavez also faces an October trial after being accused of criminal sexual penetration of a minor, criminal sexual contact of a minor, kidnapping and bribery of a witness.
