GROVE CITY, Ohio (AP) - Authorities say nine people were rescued after four canoes overturned in central Ohio.

Jackson Township Fire Captain Shawn Quincel says it happened in Big Darby Creek Sunday afternoon. He says the creek’s current was strong because of recent storms.

Divers scoured the water and a police helicopter searched from above to look for victims in the creek.

One woman was taken to a hospital in critical condition. But officials say she’s expected to survive. Quincel says it was a near drowning.

Others were able to make it to an island and were taken to shore in a raft.
