PRESCOTT, Ariz. (AP) - Yavapai County authorities are changing the focus of their investigation into the death of a 23-year-old woman whose body was found in a Cottonwood drainage canal.

They now say it may not be a homicide case after all.

The county medical examiner’s office says the cause of death is an apparent drowning and a drug overdose.

The body of Jennifer Holgate was discovered Thursday. A resident has reported seeing her swimming alone in the canal that afternoon.

Holgate was from Prescott Valley, but deputies think she traveled back and forth between Prescott Valley and Cottonwood over the last few days of her life.

Holgate was released from the Camp Verde Detention Center on June 9. She had been in jail for two days after being arrested on a misdemeanor warrant.
