ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - A 2-year-old cat named Moosie has finally arrived in Fairbanks after a 64-day journey by truck, boat and train.

Moosie was trapped inside of a futon mattress that was placed inside a box during his owners’ move from El Paso to Fairbanks, reports KTVA-Alaska (https://bit.ly/1IFjIXE).

Kymberly Chelf and her husband Jesse were leaving Fort Briggs for Fort Wainwright. One of the last things the movers packed was the futon.

When the Chelfs couldn’t find Moosie, they thought their pet had run away, maybe escaping through the open door while movers worked.

“It was very heartbreaking thinking that we had lost him,” said Kymberly. “We tried everything to find him.”

But their belongings arrived at their new Alaska home last Thursday, and Kimberly was shocked when she heard a meow a few hours later.

“As soon as I heard him meowing, it just sounded like he was giving it everything he had just to let us know he was there,” she said.

The Chelfs were shocked. Moosie had more than two months in total darkness without food or water.

They rushed him to the veterinarian, where he is being treated for severe dehydration. But the vet gave him a good prognosis.

“He does have some changes to his liver, but his kidneys were working fine, which is really astounding,” said veterinarian Hayden Nevill. “We started first with rehydrating him, and now our big challenge is we have to get his entire digestive system restarted.”

Kymberly says this isn’t the first time she’s had to rescue Moosie from a dark place.

When he was just three weeks old, Moosie was rescued from inside her neighbor’s wall. His mother had gotten tangled in wires there and died.

“We took a sledgehammer and got all the cats, kittens out,” she said.
