ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) - Goalie Philipp Grubauer has signed a $1.5 million, two-year contract to stay with the Washington Capitals.

The team announced the deal Monday. It will pay Grubauer $650,000 next season, then $850,000 in the 2016-17 season.

The 23-year-old Grubauer won Game 2 of the Capitals’ first-round playoff series against the New York Islanders, becoming the first German-born goalie to start an NHL playoff game.

He has appeared in 20 career games for the Capitals, going 7-6-5 with a 2.44 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage.
