PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Portland police say a homeless man suffered a serious arm injury when he was slashed with a machete.

Sgt. Pete Simpson says the 42-year-old victim was taken to a Portland hospital after the Sunday night attack. He is expected to survive.

A witness told police that the victim and another homeless man were involved in an altercation before the suspect retrieved a machete from a belt-worn sheath. After cutting the victim, the suspect ran northbound on the Eastbank Esplanade.

Several officers checked the area but did not find the suspect.

Simpson says officers believe the men knew each other before the fight.
