ATMORE, Ala. (AP) - Authorities are trying to determine what killed an inmate who was found dead in his cell on Alabama’s death row.

The prison system says 43-year-old John Milton Hardy was found unresponsive in his cell at Holman prison in Atmore early Monday.

Medical workers weren’t able to revive the man, and a prison doctor pronounced him dead at 3:23 a.m.

Corrections officials say the cause of death is under investigation. A state pathologist will perform an autopsy.

A prison spokesman says there were no obvious signs of injury or trauma.

Hardy and another man were sentenced to die for the murder of Clarence Nugene Terry in 1993. Terry was shot to death during a robbery at a convenience store where he worked as a clerk in Decatur.

Hardy was convicted and sentenced to death in 1995.
