HONOLULU (AP) - Maui police say a man who was killed during a shootout with authorities after a traffic stop over the weekend shot himself.

Police on Monday identified the man as 46-year-old Shawn Akamine of Wailuku.

The two officers involved in Saturday’s shooting have not been identified. Police say both officers are on paid administrative leave. No other injuries were reported.

Investigators say that Akamine exited the passenger’s side of the vehicle and started shooting at police as he fled the scene.

The driver was questioned and released, pending further investigation.
