PERTH AMBOY, N.J. (AP) - Authorities have released the name of a Newark woman who they believe drowned in the Raritan River over the weekend.

But they say the body that was removed from the water on Sunday morning has not yet been positively identified as 22-year-old Anjanae Smith.

Friends of Smith reported her missing after they saw her enter the river near the Victory Bridge on Perth Amboy early Saturday. They have said she was then swept away by the current.

Using a side scan sonar device, state police initially located the body around 8:30 p.m. Saturday. It was about 50 yards offshore, but the river’s strong currents prevented a dive team from reaching the body that night.

The discovery culminated a lengthy search by the Coast Guard and several local agencies.
