WATSON, La. (AP) - An Opelousas man drowned while tubing on the Amite River near Watson.

Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard said in a news release that 32-year-old

Ketni Thomas was tubing on the river about 3 p.m. Saturday when he swam upstream to help a younger tuber in distress.

Ard says Thomas became exhausted and went underwater. Thomas was unresponsive when deputies were dispatched.

Several people have drowned while floating on inner tubes on the Amite River in recent years, including two men last July.
