BEND, Ore. (AP) - The McKenzie Highway, a National Scenic Byway, opens at 9 a.m. today, granting access to popular hiking destinations in the Three Sisters and Mount Washington wilderness areas.

The Bulletin in Bend reports (https://bit.ly/1KS0tfN ) that the highway threads through nearly 40 miles of lava fields and forests, offering up-close views of the Cascades, a gateway to quiet alpine lakes and a glimpse of the state’s past between Sisters and Eugene

The Oregon Department of Transportation closes the old McKenzie Pass Highway over the Cascades seasonally, sometimes as early as October.
