SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) - State police on eastern Long Island are investigating a report of an early-morning shooting on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation.

Troopers were told by workers at Southampton Hospital that two people walked into the facility at about 12:45 a.m. Monday. They told troopers they had been shot.

Police determined the two people were suffering from non-life-threatening injuries.

They were not immediately identified, other than being described as local residents.

Police say they were told the victims were attending a memorial service on the reservation when an altercation involving gunfire erupted.

One victim was later transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital.

Shinnecock spokeswoman Beverly Jensen says in a statement that tribal officials are working closely with the state police. She declined further comment.
