JASPER, Ala. (AP) - A man who was expected to go to trial in a murder-for-hire plot has died in jail.

Walker County Coroner Joey Vick tells Al.com (https://bit.ly/1LbfVVb ) 58-year-old Jimmy Lane Maxwell was found unresponsive in his cell at the county jail Monday morning.

Maxwell was indicted in the death of 66-year-old Donald Clayton Whited along with the man’s cousin and a woman accused of hindering prosecution.

An indictment said Whited was found inside his home and had been shot in his head before the house was set on fire in January 2014. The indictment says Maxwell was charged with capital murder for pecuniary gain, conspiracy to commit murder and other offenses.
