MILWAUKEE (AP) - The Milwaukee County medical examiner’s office says it will further study the heart of a 20-year-old man who died after finishing a Milwaukee half-marathon as it tries to determine the cause of his death.

The office says an autopsy was performed Monday on the body of Jon Derynda of Oconomowoc (oh-KAHN’-uh-moh-wahk). He collapsed immediately after running in the Summerfest Rock ‘n Sole on Saturday, and was pronounced dead at a hospital.

According to a medical examiner’s report, Derynda was running in his first half-marathon. His father told the office that Derynda looked exhausted like other runners at the 12-mile mark when he told him, “Dad, I’m dying.”

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and WITI-TV report Derynda was a student at University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
