BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say two construction workers struck by a five-ton plate as they worked inside a trench in downtown Birmingham are expected to survive.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue officials say their injuries were serious, but did not appear to be life-threatening. Al.com reports (https://bit.ly/1IiEzxb) that both men were taken to UAB Hospital after the Monday accident.

Birmingham Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Matt Russell says that as the men were working inside the trench, the plate shifted and hit the workers.

Emergency officials used a Stokes basket to lift them out of the trench.

Al.com reports that the men — ages 42 and 32 — worked for Southeastern Sealcoating. Their names weren’t released.
