GOOCHLAND, Va. (AP) - A Midlothian woman has died after police say she was struck by a pickup truck as she tried to cross Interstate 64 after her car broke down.

WWBT-TV (https://bit.ly/1BjEYCf ) reports the crash happened around 3:40 p.m. Monday just before the Rockville exit in Goochland County.

Police say 56-year-old Brenda K. Mekhimar’s car broke down on the right shoulder of the highway. Mekhimar and her husband crossed the travel lanes of the interstate to get help from a nearby construction crew.

When the couple and a worker crossed back over to the disabled vehicle, police say Mekhimar stepped into the path of a pickup truck. The driver of the pickup was unable to avoid her.

Mekhimar died at the scene. Police say no charges will be filed.
