YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) - Students at Eastern Michigan University will need to pack more than books this fall.

The university’s governing board approved a 7.8 percent increase in tuition and fees. It means the cost for an in-state freshman will be $10,417 for the year, not including campus housing. The increase affects other students, too.

When it comes to tuition, Eastern says it still expects to be near the bottom of Michigan’s 15 public universities.

Eastern says it may set a record for the number of incoming freshmen. Enrollment also is likely to be higher for transfer students and graduate students choosing the Ypsilanti school.
