BRENTWOOD, N.H. (AP) - The Rockingham County delegation has elected a new sheriff to replace Mike Downing, who died in April.

Michael Hureau of Brentwood competed against 10 other candidates Monday.

The 66-year-old Hureau, a friend of Downing’s, has been a deputy sheriff and supervisory bailiff at Rockingham Superior Court since 2005. He was a state trooper from 1972 to 2003.

In a special election, the county sheriff is not elected by the general public.

Downing, who was 60, had served two terms in the state Senate and three terms in the House. He also was a state trooper and a police officer in Salem.
